Foreigner's Regional Registration Office

One of the most important things an Expatriate has to once he is coming for a long term stay is that he/she has to register with the FRRO office. Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO). This must be done in 14 days of arrival or else you attract a penalty fee.

The Foreigner’s regional registration office (FRRO) in Mumbai is located at the following address and it is very easy to get around there.

What is FRRO For ?

  • It is a registering authority for all Foreign Nationals who are relocating to India.
  • The FRRO office functions like a division of a police department and you need to come in person here to register.
  • The FRRO office by virtue of this registration tracks your coming and going out of the Country.
  • The FRRO permit document which is like a small booklet enables you to book the Airline Tickets and Hotels at the domestic fares etc. and at the same time bonafides that you are now a resident of India.
It is best to use help of an Agent who may be referred by your relocation agent, your company or any other expatriate. The charges for the same do not exceed more than Rs.2000/- all inclusive.

WHO SHOULD REGISTER???

  • Any foreigner who enters India on a visa valid for 180 days or less and wishes to stay in India for a period of more than 180 days.
  • Any foreigner who enters India on a visa valid for a period of more than 180 days.
No registration is required if a foreigner visit India on a visa valid for 180 days or less and does not wish to extend his stay in India beyond this period.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

You are required to be present at the time of Registration and at the same time if you have any other family members (partner/spouse/children) who have accompanied you to Mumbai, then you need to register them as well.

Typical Documents required for FRRO Registration
  • Registration Form.
  • Original Passport.
  • Passport Copies.
  • Passport size photographs
  • Letter of undertaking (On company letterhead and stamped with the company seal) from the Indian employer for an employment visa or the assignee company for a business visa.
  • Cover letter (On the company’s letterhead) from the employer/ assignee company confirming your application.
  • Employment contract stating your salary, position and tenure for an employment visa.
  • Certificate of incorporation of the Indian entity.
  • Copy of the PAN card or passport of the person signing the documents. (Indian national or Resident)
  • Proof of place of residence in Mumbai (Housing agreement or hotel booking)
  • Marriage Certificate (If accompanying spouse)
  • Money for the visa charges, Foreigners Registration Booklet issue, photocopying etc. (the rates keep changing find the currant rate for your visa and nationality type)
A set of documents as mentioned above is to be given for every family member.

After the Completion of the registration formalities, the FRRO issues a residential permit and now you can officially be a resident of Mumbai….a Mumbaikar!! Cool!!
