SRA scraps 181 of 228 government joint venture projects in Mumbai

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority has scrapped 181 of 228 slum redevelopment projects that were planned under a government joint-venture model in Mumbai, citing slow progress and feasibility concerns. The cancelled projects had been envisaged in partnership with agencies such as BMC, MHADA, MMRDA, MSRDC, CIDCO and MIDC.

The joint-venture framework, introduced to speed up redevelopment on government land and cut delays, faltered as several agencies failed to complete groundwork including surveys, beneficiary verification and planning. The affected projects span nearly 2.2 lakh slum households across Mumbai and nearby areas.

A handful of projects under agencies like BMC, MHADA and MMRDA will continue, while others may be shifted to cluster redevelopment models. The large-scale cancellation marks a reset for an initiative that struggled to deliver on its intended pace.
