How stamp duty is calculated in Maharashtra

Stamp duty is a one-time tax on property transactions, paid to the Maharashtra government at registration. It is calculated as a percentage of the property's value โ€” specifically the higher of the agreement (sale) value or the government's ready-reckoner rate for that area. On top of the base stamp duty, Mumbai and other metro cities add a 1% metro cess, and cities like Pune, Thane and Nagpur add a further local-body/transport surcharge. A separate registration fee (1%, capped at โ‚น30,000) is also payable. Women buying in their own name get a 1% concession on stamp duty.
